NOPEC to Provide Nearly $16 Million in Energy Grants to Qualified N.E. Ohio Communities
SOLON February 17, 2010 More than 100 communities in nine northeast Ohio counties may be eligible to receive energy-related grants this year totaling nearly $16 million from the Northeast Ohio Public Energy Council (NOPEC).
The grant funding is being supplied by FirstEnergy Solutions Corp. (FES) as part of a recent agreement FES reached with NOPEC to provide long-term discounts on electric generation service to 129 NOPEC communities.
The grants will be provided to any qualified political subdivision that is a current electricity member of NOPEC.
A committee made up of 18 representatives of NOPEC communities recommended a wide range of projects that could result in energy savings. This committee will review all grant requests and determine if they qualify for funding.
These energy saving projects are within the contractual guidelines established between NOPEC and FES, which provided for the funds to be used for energy conservation projects; renewable energy projects; energy education projects; economic development grants for advanced energy projects to create jobs in NOPEC member communities; or for general fund purposes, upon the demonstration by a NOPEC member community of financial distress.
“NOPEC is proud to be able to give back to our member communities,” said Joseph Migliorini, chairman of NOPEC . “These grants are intended to help our communities reduce energy consumption. Making Northeast Ohio more energy efficient is not only good for the environment, but it also makes our region more competitive from an economic standpoint.”
The funding for the grants was a vital factor in NOPEC’s recent decision to select FES as the provider of the discounted electric generation service that will be sold to residents and businesses in NOPEC member communities. The grants are to be distributed by NOPEC under a program called “Powering Our Communities.”
The potential dollar amount of the grants per community will be based on the number of NOPEC customers in each community. For each NOPEC customer, $30 in grant money will be available, with a minimum grant amount of $50,000 for those that apply and are approved. Communities may apply for the grants beginning on March 1, 2010 and must apply on or before February 28, 2011. Questions about the grants can be directed to Leigh Herington, Executive Director of NOPEC, at 440.248.1992 or via .
NOPEC is a non-profit governmental organization that offers residential and small business utility customers in 129 member communities in nine northeast Ohio counties a discounted electricity program as well as a natural gas program. Since NOPEC's inception in 2000, NOPEC has saved northeast Ohio consumers over $80 million on their utility bills. NOPEC is the largest governmental retail energy aggregation in the nation, serving about 425,000 electric customers and about 250,000 natural gas customers.
