The Opt-Out Process for your Electricity Account
Staying as a member of NOPEC
You are automatically included in NOPEC , unless you choose not to be. Therefore, if you decide to stay with NOPEC, you need not do anything. Ohio's electricity deregulation law has what is called an "opt-out" provision. This means that all eligible electric consumers in an aggregated community become part of the buying group unless they take specific action to opt out of the aggregation.
Opt-out notices were sent by letter to all eligible customers in the NOPEC communities. Those customers wishing to withdraw from the NOPEC buying group completed and returned the form.
Those remaining in the program are enrolled for a period of two years, after which a new opt-out process will take place. Consumers who wish to leave before the two-year period has expired may be subject to a cancellation fee.
Finding an electricity provider on your own
If you opt out you are free to find another electricity supplier independently. Once you have returned the opt-out card, you are no longer a NOPEC member and may sign with any electricity provider you choose. You will not be able to re-join NOPEC for two years.
Staying with your current electricity provider
To stay with your current electricity provider you must simply return the opt-out form mailed to you. If you return the opt-out card and do not choose another supplier, your account will automatically default to your current provider. It would be wise, however to contact your provider to discuss rates and conditions.
